Writing a research paper or other style term paper allows for an instructor to give their student s the opportunity to show what they have learned from the course and from the students own work. But at the same time, a group should strive to avoid having too many members as the overarching purpose of the group is to get students involved in the learning process outside of class, and getting involved can be difficult if the group is composed of too many members. The most effective group size seems to be around three to six members, but each student and each group can play with this number if they so choose and invite more or less depending on their vision for the group.
This is not to say that there is no place for free writing in the process of writing a paper, because there in fact is. Free writing can be used to great effect as a way for a student to get into the hard to capture writing mood and help them to put their ideas down on paper, however rudimentary those thoughts and ideas may be.
Come back to those initial concepts in 15 minutes and see if you still remember them. Study them again until you understand and come back in 15 minutes to try again. Once you master the 15 minute mark, try again in a couple of hours. Review the concepts you missed and set it aside for more time.
Another such important decision that the group can make on their first meeting together will be how to organize the study sessions to follow. In general, the decision to simply wing it or to just compare notes is less effective.
Finding the right methodology of how to approach a term paper will largely be up to the individual student to figure out how they can best fit a writing method to their personal learning and writing style. Still, there are a few template ways in which a student can start with in order to find the way that works best for them.
To keep the material fresh, try yourself on the concepts again in a couple of days. If you do well, test yourself in a couple weeks. Move up onto months to keep the information usable in the future.
