This runs true for humans as well. When humanity first came into existence, there needed to be a community that they would form and help each other out that way. So, when communities were made, people need to have roles that would assigned to them. But, it would not be decided by birth but by skill.
At the start of it, each role that people had, they were born into. During the ancient times that man roamed the earth, men and women had two roles that each could have. The hunter or gather or the mother. Now, men were the hunters because of their natural bodies and women would be tasked to rear children.
When the ages passed on by more opportunities were open to both genders. The early 18th to late 19th century were particularly open about their love for artist and authors. Women would be given the chance to become educators and earn some money of their own and have some form of independence through it.
Here in the modern world, the opportunities that each young person has is incredible. When one is able to get the skills that is necessary to work, many companies would want to hire that person for a job. These are the things that is necessary if one wants to get some money and live on in life.
