Some marine operators attempt to fit and adapt a standard truck crane for use in marine applications. While these cranes can be of high quality and may be excellent for inland use, they do not have sufficient corrosion protection to make them suitable for marine use. The standard paint and chroming that is used on various components of a truck mounted crane will quickly deteriorate, making the crane vulnerable to corrosion. In addition, marine cranes are designed to be mounted above a surface or deck, and the location of control valves and hydraulic hoses are arranged to accommodate above deck mounting. While some components of a standard truck crane can be relocated to accommodate above deck mounting, doing so is not optimal.
