How To Apply Insect Repellent Safely

By Roger Fisher

Mosquitoes and other insects can give you a terrible outdoor experience. They even invade your house and make it inhabitable. In some cases, they will turn you into a victim while ignoring everyone else. The best solution is to use insect repellent instead of living in a perpetual war with these insects. However, even the best repellents will disappoint if their application is poor. Here are tips that will unveil the magic in repellents.

Apply sunscreen at the base of your skin before the repellents. The idea is to keep your skin safe from chemicals and also enable you to manage the demands of external space. CDC advises against using a mixture of both repellents and sunscreens because they are not applied on the skin in equal quantities. This means that you will be under protected from insects or exposure to the sun.

Apply repellents evenly and smoothly on the skin. Be cautious to ensure that all parts of your skin are covered. Do not over-apply repellents because they will affect the skin and may contain harmful chemicals if applied in large quantities. The idea is to deal with the aggressive insects that are likely to spread diseases and damage your skin. These insects can smell exposed areas and target them with specificity. Go an inch deeper into sleeves after applying on exposed hands and such other areas.

Repellents are only supposed to be applied on exposed areas. Camping specialists recommend the use of trousers and long sleeve shirts since insects cannot bit beyond your clothing. However, the aggressive ticks and mosquitoes will find their way into your sleeves. The sensitive areas should be applied using hands to avoid wastage or negative reactions with the skin.

There areas that are best applied using hands instead of spraying. This is especially important for sensitive areas like around eyes, ears and the nose. This spray may get into areas like open wounds, bruises and cuts, leading to more damage. Wash your hands thoroughly, especially if you will be eating.

Folds like ankles and knees should receive special attention. There are spots that are extremely attractive to insects like ticks. They love ankles, knees and feet. These are primary targets because the pets hop from plants and ground level. If these areas are not sprayed, they become the hiding places, leaving you as exposed as if you did not take any precaution.

Be cautious when applying repellents on kids. Their skins are delicate and likely to react negatively with your skin. According to CDC, children below 2 months should have repellents applied. Even when these children are older, direct spraying is not recommended. Instead, spray the repellent on your hands and apply on the child. Other precautions are as you would for adults.

Reapplication is only recommended if your repellent has lost its power. The design of repellents is that they will protect you for hours. There are people who require more applications because of their body chemistry. The effectiveness of repellents may also be affected by a poor quality brand. Check reviews for the most effective products especially the healthy brands for sensitive skins.
