8 Rules for Car Maintenance

By Dillo Insurance

Owning a car is a big responsibility, one of the most important things you can do as a car owner is to keep it healthy. Follow these simple steps in order to keep your car in its best shape possible.

Get Your Oil Changed: Make it a habit to change your engine oil once every 3 months or every 3000 miles or whichever come first. Your engine is the heart of your car, and the oil is the blood flowing in it. If your car runs out of oil completely your engine can "lock" and a repair can cost you $1,000 or more.

Find a Mechanic You Trust: Find the right mechanic to do all of your car maintenance as soon as you buy your car, or get trained to do your own. When you find the right mechanic you will be able to get advice about the best things you can do to keep your car in its best shape.

Watch Your Tires: Stay on top of your tires! Memorize the right tire pressure for your cars wheels and then check them often to make sure you are getting the best gas mileage possible and keeping them in the best shape possible.

Pay Attention to Warning Signals: Pay attention to the warning signals, they are there for a reason. If a light comes on in your car and remains on for more than a day, you car is trying to tell you something. Dashboard lights are the easiest and most important indicators of a problem with your car. Putting off a minor problem in the short run can lead to a major problem in the long run. For example, if your check engine light goes on because one of the belts is loose, that is a quick fix. If you let that belt stay loose and eventually it wears down or gets stuck somewhere it should not, that can be a much more costly fix.

Look for Leaks: Every morning when you pull out of your driveway check and make sure there isn't a spot of liquid on the ground from something leaking. If there is any leakage, get it checked out quickly. Also check around your car to make sure there are no other noises or leaks around your car at least once every few months.

Get a Tune Up: Do a regular tuning of your vehicle. This can be done at your mechanic or at most dealerships. Tune up should be done to major part of your vehicle like oil changes, tires checked etc.

Prepare for the Seasons: Keep your car in time with the seasons - take precautions to prepare it for extreme heat or cold and major weather situations.

Check Fluid Levels: Make sure there is sufficient fluid in all of your car parts. Just like it's hard on your body if you are dehydrated, is dangerous to drive a dehydrated car!
